Review of Deadlocked by A. R. Wise
Subtitled: “A Father’s Journey Home Through A Zombie Apocalypse”

I consider “Deadlocked” one of the better Zombie stories I have read. Using the first-person narrative of a workaholic spouse and father who finally realizes his life has been virtually wasted, in the sense of never spending time with or getting to know his kids, really deepened the story for me. His perspective is by necessity very upfront and visual, yet also tactile, as he is living through the beginning stages of the Zombiefication, and his thoughts are torn between his own survival, and getting home to protect his wife and two very young daughters. I also appreciate the way in which the protagonist catalyzed the realisations in other characters, so that rather than being some two-dimensional paper cutout, instead he’s a fully-rounded and very active character, affecting those around him. David is quite a character, and so is his spouse Laura, who takes over the next in the series.
Additionally, the author’s note from A. R. Wise is equally as riveting as the novella! I’m very impressed.
