Review: DIURNAL by Kim White

An indelibly beautiful short story which lingers in the mind and heart for a long time, DIURNAL explores the soul of Susan, a suburban jewelry creator, and through her observations, her husband, her neighbors, strangers, and her final pregnancy. Susan is a woman of a deep soul, and expresses it through her jewelry designs. I believe she unconsciously found herself constrained, and through her creativity expressed a desire for freedom, for flight. Certainly she found relating to others and expressing love constrained. I think only through her final pregnancy did she allow herself to express love, and then only for the unborn. But there, neither were the results of that ideal.
