A delicate, literary fantasy with good world-building, THE WINTER BOY actually concentrates on its characters. In a semi-matriarchal culture, the women--Aleshi-train and model young males, one per season, to mature as future leaders. Readers who devoured Ursula K. LeGuin' s EARTHSEA series will definitely be drawn to ponder THE WINTER BOY.
