Review: BY ALL MEANS by Chris Culver

I really enjoyed this multicultural mystery, which diverges from mainstream suspense and quite expanded my imaginative horizons; I plan to read the entire series. Protagonist Ash Rashid is a member of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (again, not the usual locale), and in this installment is now working in community policing (formerly he had been an investigator in the prosecutor's office.) What makes Ash an unusual protagonist is that he is a Muslim-American, a devoted practitioner of Islam. Contrary to the stereotypical viewpoint, Ash is a family man, a householder with bills and expenses, joys and sufferings, a sometimes difficult and ugly career;  in other words, a human, a man, a father and husband, with a good heart, trying to balance the many daily demands on his feet.
