Review: THE STRANGER by Harlan Coben The two absolute perfect authors delving in the sub-genre of middle-class suburban contemporary mystery are Harlan Coben (American) and Linwood Barclay (Canadian). The reader knows to expect extraordinarily detailed portraits of suburban life, illustrated by seemingly unexceptional individuals just striving to get along, to live life, to exhibit "the American dream." On the surface life is good: health, moderate wealth, families, sports activities, careers, schools, love, marriage. But the subterranean spring of secrets and deceits always, at some point, overflows, and the subsequent quake results in a sinkhole in the marriage, family, individual. Guaranteed is an engrossing reading experience to make the reader ponders reexamine her or his own life, and retain the impact of this novel in memory.
