A not-too-near future science fiction noir about societal slavishness and corporate overlords (or: Madison Avenue to the ultimate max), this short story is actually scary, in the way that apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic predictive fiction can be. Looking around at the current celebrity cults, marketing mania, and general shallowness (keeping up with the Jones' has become a near-religious obsession), it's easy to believe this 2089 scenario could be true.
