At once a literary novel, a thriller, a suspense-rife mystery, and a novel of family relationships and individual character evolution, UNPAVED SURFACES is set in a small Maine community, Holyhead, adjacent to Portland but insular in its own right. One of the underpinnings of the story is the ongoing road construction on Holyhead' s busiest roadway, and the mother, Claire's, ongoing "Share the Road" campaign for adding safe trails. Yet the title also references the subterranean currents in the lives of the Battle family: chef Keith and writer Claire, adolescents Frances and Shippen, younger Auggie and Beany.
