Matt Bergles is a Colorado native who grew up in Pueblo, Colorado. He earned a bachelor's degree in social science from CSU-Pueblo, his master's degree in U.S. history, and a Ph.D. in public affairs at CU Denver, as well as a certificate in alternative dispute resolution. 

Matt currently teaches at a K-8 private school in Denver, where he has witnessed firsthand young, inner-city kids' curiosity and love of animals and nature, observing that every time they are asked what community service project or charitable cause they'd like to be involved with, most K-3 students pick something related to domestic animals or wildlife. This natural love and curiosity led Matt to write Larry Saves the Prairie for young children.

Matt is an independent researcher and advocate for wildlife conservation, especially conservation of prairie habitat. Matt lives in Denver with his wife, Kate, two children, Luke and Mary, and dog Samuel. He is a volunteer coach, a private pilot, and has helped teach his teenage son to fly.

Review:  EMPTY NEST by Marty Wingate (A Birds of a Feather Mystery)

EMPTY NEST is riveting! So much so, I recommend setting aside a block of time to read it start to finish--you won't want to stop before the end. I certainly didn't. As a cozy, you're not going to get gore nor gritty, but you certainly will find plenty of mystery, plenty of genuine recognizable human emotions, plenty of twists, and a surprising and precarious denouement (precarious for the protagonist). Accomplished author Marty Wingate provides a self-aware narrator who is not afraid to analyze her own character and to examine her own emotions, and due to this, the first person narrative is lively and fitting.

Julia Lanchester, daughter of celebrity bird watching expert Rupert Lanchester, is employed as director of the Tourist Information Center in a small Sussex village. Temporarily housed at the manor till mold in her antique cottage is eradicated, Julia becomes  part of the scene, although neither quite family or staff. But the return of the heir precipitates a death, Julia is keen to uncover facts, while simultaneously coping with a distance relationship and her own fear of commitment.

From a stunning first chapter that blew me away, CLOSURE hits the ground at near the speed of light.

From there it's nonstop and I couldn't put it down. Author Larry Quartley has an articulate, literate, approach which shines gemlike in the context of a plot both gritty and noir-ish. I eagerly anticipate this author's next entry.

One of my special interests is alternative history. Since childhood I've been a "what if?" person. I am overjoyed to discover (thanks to NetGalley) the exceptional independent historian and author John-Allen Price. INTO TYRANNY is the first volume in an incredible alternate rendering of not just the U.S., but Europe, on the eve of World War II. [Socialist France! The U. S. on the verge of Fascism!]

Mr. Price not only paints the broad landscape of politics and politicians, of war and peace, of the American economy post-Depression. He also delineates human emotions: greed and respect, aggression and compassion, ego and altruism, grief and surrender, vengeance and hope. His chapters on the American populace's grief at FDR's early and untimely death in 1939 made me weep; it was similar, for me, to the grieving at the assassination of JFK. Even the characters who loom larger than life are still clearly individualized: the late FDR and Hitler, MacArthur and Patton, Hoover, Father Coughlin, Huey Long.

INTO TYRANNY is an incredible novel. The next volume of CAESAR ANERICANUS: AN AMERICAN CIVIL WAR, INTO FIRE, releases December 1.

Brian Kirk lives in Atlanta with his beautiful wife and rambunctious identical twin boys. Review: WRONG CROWD by Richard Godwin

The very commencement of this novel [the beach scene where Claude first espies Maxine] so vividly reminded me of the film "10," and its beach scene where the Dudley Moore character first sees Bo Derek. I couldn't get that comparison out of my mind. Like Moore's character in the film, our antihero Claude has all his life been on a collision course with an unpopulated universe, poorly raised in childhood, never really following any goals or purpose. Until now--until Maxine...and Claude, in the throes of requited obsession, never stops to wonder: "If this is too good to be true--then is it true?" Hard-boiled, literate London noir [I'm also reminded of Graham Greene.
